La Hacienda Cancun: An In-Depth Review for Ayahuasca Retreats in Cancún, Mexico

La Hacienda Cancun is a family-run, 12-room jungle property in El Ramonal, about 13 km from central Cancún, that sells short plant medicine retreats on Retreat Guru and BookRetreats and rents rooms as a hotel under the name Reserva Ecologica Hacienda Cancun. Its host, Sara Vela, describes herself as a psychologist, temazcalera and medicine woman. Programs combine ayahuasca, bufo (toad venom), kambo, peyote, rapé, cacao and temazcal, from $850 for three days to $2,150 for a 12-day detox. It rates 4.88 on Retreat Guru from 17 reviews and 4.96 on BookRetreats from 15, with praise for caring facilitators and the setting. Against that, no medical screening, contraindications, medical staff or emergency plan is published, programs stack two bufo sessions with kambo inside 48 hours, no legal entity is disclosed, and critical reviews describe ceremonies starting minutes after arrival and a free bufo session offered as compensation.

• Overall Assessment: Easy access, private rooms and consistently warm platform reviews, offset by no published screening or emergency plan for heavy medicine stacking, unnamed facilitators, no disclosed entity, legal exposure for DMT and commercial peyote, and complaints about rushed and disorganized programs. 💬 What Guests Are Saying

The positive picture. Retreat guests praise caring, trustworthy facilitators, including Sara and a shaman named Rene, spider monkeys and birds, healthy food, clean rooms, flexibility with extra nights or ceremonies, and transformative experiences; one describes a third visit.

The negative feedback. A March 2026 three-star reviewer who booked the longest detox says few people attended, preparation questions went unanswered, enema equipment needed for several sessions was not disclosed, the pool was dirty and the jacuzzi empty, detox guests felt pushed toward “medicine,” and the group was offered a free bufo experience as compensation. A one-star reviewer says rapé began about ten minutes after arrival with no introduction, followed by temazcal, with bufo and ayahuasca to come, that fish was served the night before ayahuasca despite a vegan detox menu, and that it “is not a professional setting.” Even a 2025 five-star reviewer notes “not everyone had a positive experience.” Hotel guests report the property is hard to find, and one says no staff were on site. All unverified.

Who is writing the reviews. All 15 BookRetreats reviews are five stars with one-line host replies, and Retreat Guru repeats the same reviews across many cloned event pages. Mexico has prosecuted ayahuasca cases: a Colombian healer spent about two years in jail after being arrested at Mexico City’s airport in 2022 with DMT-containing ayahuasca, as Noticias Caracol reported. In January 2022 a woman died at a “detox” ceremony near Nogales, Sonora, and two self-described shamans were arrested, as Mexico News Daily reported. Neither case involves this center. Our earlier profile reported a 2024 Tripadvisor review in which two female guests felt unsafe after encountering staff who appeared intoxicated late at night; we found no Tripadvisor listing for the property, and the account remains unverified.

🔍 Critical Notes

Screening. No medical questionnaire, contraindication list or medication policy appears on any program page, including those for bufo and kambo. No medical staff is named; Sara Vela’s psychology credential is self-described and was not checked.

Medicine stacking. The three-day bufo program gives two bufo sessions, kambo, rapé and temazcal within about 48 hours, and the five-day program pairs kambo and ayahuasca on one day with bufo the next. The operator markets bufo, from a toad “that inhabits Northern Mexico,” for treating addictions but never names its active compound, 5-MeO-DMT, the dose or who administers it. Listings also advertise optional “biomagnetism, stem cells, ozone.”

Who runs it. Reviews describe Sara, her husband and her son as owners and staff, and bookings are handled by a host named Jerzy. No company name or tax number (RFC) appears on any listing.

Listings conflict. Retreat Guru includes an airport transfer and allows up to 12 guests; BookRetreats says no transfer is provided and groups are four to six. Reviews report groups of two or three.

Legal context. DMT, psilocybin mushrooms and mescaline from peyote are listed in Article 245 of Mexico’s General Health Law, as transcribed by mley.mx. Ayahuasca ceremonies are tolerated in practice but no ruling authorizes them, and the indigenous-use exemption for peyote does not extend to commercial retreats, according to Mind Medicine Law.

Corrections to our earlier profile. Prices are in US dollars, from $850 to $2,150, not MXN 14,310 to 18,000, and programs run three, five, 12 and 14 days, not four to five. Groups of two to four are what reviews report, not a policy. The ayahuasca, peyote, bufo, kambo, temazcal, meditation and chanting offerings, the family-run hacienda in El Ramonal and the service inconsistencies are confirmed. Colonial and Mayan architecture, cenote-like pools, formal protected-reserve status, Reiki master Julio, spiritual psychologist Victor, facilitators trained in somatic healing, Tripadvisor and Booking.com reviews from 2024 and 2025, a “100% recommendation” rate and a 2025 Tripadvisor post about WiFi remain unverified.

🆘 Screening & Mental Health Risks

No screening, contraindications, medical staff or emergency protocol is published; hospitals are in Cancún, about 13 km away. ICEERS notes that ayahuasca’s MAOI component makes it dangerous with SSRIs and other serotonergic drugs and that it is contraindicated for people prone to psychosis. Combining 5-MeO-DMT with MAOIs is especially risky, and kambo can cause severe vomiting and blood pressure changes. Never stop a psychiatric medication to qualify for a ceremony without your prescriber’s guidance.

🧪 Brew Substance

The ayahuasca’s source and preparation are not described. Ayahuasca combines the Banisteriopsis caapi vine with a DMT-containing leaf such as chacruna, as Erowid explains. Bufo, kambo, peyote, rapé and cacao are also served, and earlier programs offered yopo.

📍 Location, Setting & Style

• Setting: A jungle subdivision near Cancún with a pool, palapas and wildlife; reviewers mention airplane noise and insects.
• Rooms: Private or shared jungle-view rooms with private bathrooms, air conditioning and WiFi.
• Style: Short, multi-medicine intensives with vegan or vegetarian detox meals and integration circles.

Practical guidance: Fly into Cancún; arrival pickup is listed on Retreat Guru, but confirm it, as other listings disagree. Departure transport is not included. Schedules “may change.”

Should You Book?

Sara Vela describes herself as born in Mexico City, living in the jungle near Cancún for over 20 years, and as a psychologist, Waldorf educator, chef, temazcalera and medicine woman. The operator claims over 20 years in alternative medicine; the property has hosted hotel guests since at least 2018. We did not independently verify anyone’s training.
