Allpa Mama Healing: An In-Depth Review for Retreats near Vilcabamba, Ecuador
Allpa Mama Healing is a small plant medicine retreat in Malacatos, in the southern Ecuadorian Andes near Vilcabamba, founded in 2023 by Katie Mullan, an American San Pedro ceremonialist, with her partner Taita Miguel, a mestizo curandero from Cuenca. It runs retreats of six to nine days for up to six guests, combining San Pedro, ayahuasca and wilka, a seed snuff the center says contains 5-MeO-DMT, at a rustic country house with a pool, jacuzzi and steam room. Prices are published, from $1,444 to $2,222, and its handful of reviews are all five stars. We found no incidents. The concern is safety disclosure: across about 14 of the center’s own pages we found no medical screening, contraindication list, medical staff or emergency plan, and one listing claimed wilka is “known to heal terminal illness.” Our earlier profile needs correcting on location, prices and program details.
🎯 At a Glance
- Locations: A countryside house in Malacatos, Loja province, about 30 minutes from Loja city and an hour from Catamayo airport, according to its Retreat Guru page. Earlier retreats ran in Vilcabamba and near Otavalo, and one weekend was held in Vermont, USA, in 2024.
- Approach: Andean and Amazonian ceremonies led by Katie Mullan (San Pedro) and Taita Miguel (ayahuasca and wilka), with limpias (cleansings), plant baths, river cleansings, hikes, yoga, cacao and sharing circles. Some retreats bring in other healers, including a Shuar taita for ayahuasca in July 2025.
- Suitable For: People who want a very small, intimate retreat in a mild Andean valley with traditional healers and some comforts, and who are willing to ask detailed safety questions themselves. Less suited to anyone who needs medical screening or medical staff.
- Costs: $1,444 to $1,555 for six-day San Pedro retreats in 2027 and $2,222 for the eight-day ayahuasca, San Pedro and wilka retreat in December 2026, according to its Retreat Guru listings; earlier listings ran from $1,200 for a week to $4,400 for a month. Deposits of $500 to $700 have been non-refundable on some platforms. Transfers are extra. Our earlier profile said prices and program lengths were not published; both are.
- Overall Assessment: A small, warmly reviewed retreat with experienced healers, published prices and good facilities, offset by no published screening, contraindications, medical staff or emergency plan, a potent 5-MeO-DMT medicine served alongside ayahuasca, an unsupported healing claim and a rotating roster of healers. Directory evaluation: C+.
💬 What Guests Are Saying
Here is how Allpa Mama Healing rates across review platforms in October 2026:
| Platform | Rating | Reviews | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| BookRetreats | 5.00 / 5 | 6 | All positive |
| WeTravel | Not shown | 4 | Review count only |
| Retreat Guru | None | 0 | Two testimonials posted by the center from May 2026 guests |
| Tripadvisor, Google, Trustpilot, AyaAdvisors | Not found | n/a | No listings surfaced |
The positive picture. BookRetreats reviewers describe knowledgeable, patient facilitators, a safe and sacred space, small groups, genuine care and transformative ceremonies. Testimonials the center posted on Retreat Guru praise Katie Mullan’s care, the songs and feeling safe.
The negative feedback. None found, though one reviewer described the food as “simple and enough.”
Who is writing the reviews. About 10 independent reviews in total is a small sample. The BookRetreats listing has a blank organizer field and empty sections, and listing details vary from page to page: Taita Miguel’s experience is given as 27, 28 or 30 years, Katie Mullan’s time in Ecuador as five or six years, and group sizes as up to 6, 8 or 25. We found no review incentives. If you have attended, we encourage you to share your experience through our submission form.
🚩 Incident Report
We searched review platforms, Ecuadorian, US and English-language news, and legal sources for reports involving Allpa Mama Healing, Katie Mullan and Taita Miguel.
- Deaths and serious injuries: None found.
- Sexual misconduct: No allegations found.
- Theft and crime: No reports found.
- Legal action: None found.
Given the center’s small online footprint, the absence of reports is limited evidence. If you have experienced or witnessed an incident at Allpa Mama Healing, please report it confidentially.
🔍 Critical Notes
No published safety information. We reviewed about 14 of the center’s own pages on its website, Retreat Guru, WeTravel and BookRetreats. None mentions a medical questionnaire, contraindicated medications, medical staff, an emergency protocol or the distance to a hospital, though Loja city is roughly 30 minutes to an hour away by road. The center does publish dieta guidance and offers a pre-retreat call and post-retreat Zoom integration.
Wilka and an unsupported healing claim. Wilka (vilca) is a seed preparation from the Anadenanthera tree, used as a snuff, which the center says contains 5-MeO-DMT, an extremely potent short-acting psychedelic. It is served in the same retreats as ayahuasca. An October 2025 listing said wilka is “known to heal terminal illness,” a claim with no medical support. Anyone with a serious illness should not rely on it.
Who serves the medicine. The roster changes by retreat. The current Retreat Guru page lists only Katie Mullan as a guide, a July 2025 listing named a Shuar healer, Taita German Nantipia, as the ayahuasca healer instead of Taita Miguel, and the 2027 Retreat Guru schedule is San Pedro only. Confirm who will lead each ceremony.
The legal position. Ecuador’s 2008 constitution recognizes ancestral medicine, but there is no detailed law or regulation for ayahuasca ceremonies, leaving a legal gray area, according to an October 2026 legal briefing. How that recognition applies to foreign-led retreats is unclear. In 2019 a curandero was detained at Quito airport carrying dried San Pedro, as El Comercio reported. The center also held an all-night San Pedro ceremony in Londonderry, Vermont, in July 2024; mescaline is a controlled substance under US federal law. See our country-by-country legal guide.
Corrections to our earlier profile. The center now operates from Malacatos; the last Otavalo retreat we found was in November 2025. Prices and program lengths are published. We found no source for the claims that the ayahuasca is made only from caapi and chacruna with “nothing else added,” that Taita Miguel has led “thousands” of ceremonies, that nearly all profits go to Ecuadorians, or that a share funds reforestation of sacred plants; they remain unverified. Katie Mullan’s apprenticeship is given as five and a half years on one platform and seven years of holding ceremonies on another.
🆘 Screening & Mental Health Risks
We found no published screening process, contraindication list or medication policy. The center’s preparation guidance asks guests to avoid red meat, alcohol and drugs for one to two weeks beforehand and to limit caffeine, spice, onion and garlic. Combining ayahuasca, San Pedro and a 5-MeO-DMT snuff in one retreat makes medical screening especially important. ICEERS notes that ayahuasca’s MAOI component makes combinations with SSRIs and other serotonergic medications contraindicated, and that ayahuasca is contraindicated for people prone to psychosis. Erowid warns of extreme, possibly fatal reactions with some prescription drugs. Combining 5-MeO-DMT with an MAOI brew carries its own serious risks. Ask what screening is done, which medications are excluded, how far apart the ayahuasca and wilka ceremonies are, and how a medical emergency would be handled. Never stop a psychiatric medication to qualify for a retreat without your prescriber’s guidance.
🧪 Brew Substance
The center does not publish its ayahuasca recipe; our earlier profile said it contains only the vine and chacruna, which we could not confirm. Traditional ayahuasca combines Banisteriopsis caapi with chacruna, which supplies the DMT, as Erowid explains. A typical eight- or nine-day retreat includes two ayahuasca ceremonies, one San Pedro (huachuma) ceremony, one wilka ceremony and cacao; an 11-day retreat has three ayahuasca ceremonies. The 2027 women’s and San Pedro retreats have two San Pedro ceremonies, one overnight and one in the daytime. Hapé (rapé), tobacco, limpias, plant baths and, when available, a temazcal are also offered, along with wilka seed readings at extra cost. Ask exactly what is in each cup and how doses are set.
📍 Location, Setting & Style
- Setting: A rustic country home in an Andean valley with what the center calls “eternal spring weather,” with about four rooms, hot water, Wi-Fi, laundry, a pool, jacuzzi, steam room and sauna, and hikes to Mandango mountain.
- Rooms: Private rooms or shared rooms with at most one same-gender roommate.
- Style: Traditional Andean ceremony with modern touches. Expect sharing circles, yoga, cacao, river cleansings and Pachamama offerings, with simple, mainly vegetarian meals from local organic produce and chicken or fish available.
Practical guidance: Fly from Quito to Catamayo (Loja), then take a taxi of about an hour; the center can arrange a shared taxi at guests’ cost. Buses run from Quito and Guayaquil.
Should You Book?
Allpa Mama Healing may suit you if you want a tiny, personal retreat with traditional healers in a pleasant Andean valley, with a pool and spa, and you are an experienced, healthy guest. The trade-offs: no published screening, medication policy, medical staff or emergency plan, a 5-MeO-DMT snuff served in the same retreats as ayahuasca, an unsupported claim about curing terminal illness, and healers who vary by retreat. If you go, get the screening process, medication exclusions, the names of everyone serving medicine, the emergency plan and the refund terms in writing, and read our guide to verifying retreat facilitators.
The Team & Story
Katie Mullan, the American founder and organizer, describes herself as a huachumera trained by Taita Miguel and the Otavalo healer Mama Mercedes, and as a Sundancer with an Ojibwe elder in Wisconsin. Taita Miguel is described as a mestizo curandero born in Cuenca who began assisting taitas at 20 and learned huachuma from “Taitas of the Andes”; no surname is published. Mama Mercedes Panama, an indigenous healer and midwife from Imbabura, has led the Otavalo retreats, and Taita German Nantipia, described as a Shuar healer from Gualaquiza, led ayahuasca in July 2025. The center says it was founded in 2023 and also offers online courses and remote sessions. No legal entity is published. We did not independently verify anyone’s credentials.
Prep & Integration Tips
Before you go: Ask for a health questionnaire even though none is published, disclose every medication and condition, and talk with your own doctor well before the retreat. Follow the dieta guidance for one to two weeks. After you return: The center offers several post-retreat Zoom calls and an integration plan. Arrange support from a qualified therapist at home as well. Our guide on how to research ayahuasca incidents can help you check any center.
