💬 Guests Say

  • Deep Healing: Reddit (2017) calls the 12-day retreat “profoundly healing,” with guests noting the Shipibo shamans’ icaros and facilitator support as life-changing, though some found nearby village noise disruptive.
  • Supportive Care: Quora praises the facilitators’ attentiveness, with guests feeling safe during 7 ceremonies, but larger groups (up to 30) felt impersonal for a few, per a retreat platform review.
  • Serene Jungle: Best Retreats highlights the Amazon setting near Iquitos, with retreat.guru (3/5 rating) noting the maloka’s energy and delicious food, though some cited construction noise as a drawback.

đŸš© Incident Report

After a thorough investigation across multiple platforms—including Reddit (r/Ayahuasca), Quora, Tripadvisor, Google, Facebook groups (“Psychedelic Healing,” “Ayahuasca Experiences”), news outlets, retreat forums, and ICEERS reports—one unverified report of financial misconduct and one concerning interaction linked to Temple of the Way of Light were identified, but no verified incidents of theft, sexual misconduct, or crime were found.
  • Theft/Financial Misconduct: A 2015 review on a retreat platform alleges the Temple refused a full refund after a guest left early, despite misleading group size claims (advertised as 12 but 30 attended), impacting their healing experience. A partial refund was offered, but the guest felt dismissed, calling the center “unethical.” This remains unverified without legal action.
  • Sexual Misconduct: Reddit (2022) mentions a guest’s private interaction with a shaman, who allegedly offered private ceremonies for payment, crossing boundaries. Facilitators had advised against such interactions, and no further reports confirm this incident, making it unverified.
  • Crime: No police reports or violent incidents tied to the Temple were found in Google News, Peruvian media, or retreat forums.
The Temple’s online reputation is mixed, with strong praise on Best Retreats and retreat.guru for safety protocols but concerns on Reddit about group size and shaman conduct raising questions about consistency.

🔍 Critical Notes

Temple of the Way of Light offers a deep Shipibo-led experience, mentioned on Best Retreats and retreat.guru for its healing ceremonies, serene jungle setting, and safety protocols. Quora notes the supportive care, but Reddit highlights issues with group size (up to 30), noise disruptions, and a concerning shaman interaction, suggesting inconsistent oversight. With no 2025 dates and dated reviews, verify current operations, group size, facilitator involvement, and safety protocols directly before booking, especially given ayahuasca’s ambiguous legal status in Peru.

We work with two female, two male Shipibo healers (Onanyabo) and one female Shipibo herbalist who provide the deepest levels of traditional Shipibo healing, through ayahuasca ceremonies, plant healing songs (ikaros), energetic healing massages, individualized plant remedies, medicinal plant and vapor baths.

The powerful shamanic healing work of the Onanyabo is supported by three highly trained facilitators who provide translation from Spanish to English, and provide expert guidance and support throughout the Ayahuasca retreat, as well as an experienced yoga teacher offering Yin Yoga sessions before each ceremony.

Coming to an ayahuasca retreat in the Amazon, the birthplace and source of the medicine, being supported by the energies, elements, forces, and spirits of the jungle, and guided by the indigenous wisdom keepers of these powerful ethnomedical traditions, is the most effective and deepest way to work with ayahuasca.

Honoring Shipibo Healing Traditions

We deeply respect the indigenous healing traditions of the Shipibo People which have evolved over hundreds, possibly thousands of years.

Their far-reaching ancestral lineages carry an expansive cosmology, an encyclopedic knowledge of medicinal plants (rao, in Shipibo) and a rich, ethnomedical legacy that includes and deeply understands the non-physical dimensions of being and the energetic architecture of the mind, body, and soul.

Shipibo ayahuasca and plant-spirit healing is a reparative, regenerative, and preventative spiritual healthcare system, utilizing sophisticated practices that reach into the psychological, emotional, spiritual, and energetic taproots of trauma.

Moving beyond an anthropocentric approach to healing, focused on individual and materialistic realms, whether physical or psychological, the Shipibo approach to healing is eco-centric, fundamentally carrying the intention to restore our conscious connection and energetic alignment with the natural world.

Amazonian plant-spirit healing is an incredibly complex system and it takes many years to identify the varying levels of healers that practice ayahuasca shamanism. Finding the combination of deeply experienced, high-integrity, open-hearted healers is surprisingly difficult in the Amazon (and beyond).

We have carefully selected our healing team over many years and are blessed to work with some of the most respected, kind-hearted, and powerful healers (Onanyabo) from the Shipibo tribe who are highly skilled in ayahuasca healing and plant-spirit curanderismo (shamanism) of the Amazon.

Ancestral Wisdom of the Amazon

Our team of Onanyabo provide ‘high quality’, deep healing that stems from their decades of training, the roots of their countless generations of healing lineages, and the ancient transmissions of their wisdom traditions that ultimately are all sourced from the Amazon Rainforest itself.

What is often unknown or misunderstood in the modern psychedelic renaissance is that the key to long-lasting, root-level healing is the entire system – sophisticated plant-spirit assisted, shamanic, ethno-medical practices that clear heavy energies, transform negative thinking patterns, and heal the soul (kaya in Shipibo).

When working with ayahuasca without highly skilled shamanic healers, the psychedelic experience can be profound yet most often does not provide long-lasting healing.

Traditionally, indigenous patients in Shipibo communities typically did not drink ayahuasca when seeking healing.

It was only the village healer who drank the medicine for multiple reasons but primarily to connect with their team of (plant) spirit doctors, who would then identify and treat the energetic source of the illness.

However, there has been an evolution in ayahuasca healing over the last two decades, resulting in more and more people, in and out of the Amazon, stepping into and taking responsibility for their own healing.

The wisdom keepers and guardians of this sacred healing technology are now called to share their mastery of ayahuasca and expert guidance to people who are genuinely seeking and committed to deep healing.

All ayahuasca brew served at the Temple is sourced from two places. Our own sustainable ayahuasca and chacruna cultivation on the Temple grounds, then cooked by one of the Temple healers. Or sourced from Shipibo territory and cooked by healers from our close ally, Shipibo Rao Diea Center near Pucallpa.

We provide potent and visionary ayahuasca to our guests made from cielo (sky/heaven) ayahuasca and chacruna, with no admixtures.

The Temple leads the way in the ayahuasca scene, offering an exemplary track record of safety, protection, care for, and support of our guests together with the highest level of healing and shamanic mastery available in the Peruvian Amazon and beyond.

Safe Ayahuasca Retreats & Plant Spirit Healing in the Amazon

All of our ayahuasca healing retreats feature a balance of highly experienced female and male healers (Onanya) from the indigenous Shipibo-Konibo tribe. Our incredible team of healers together carry hundreds of years of experience practicing the ancient art of ayahuasca shamanism. They are supported by our highly trained and knowledgeable Western facilitators, who act as a critical cultural bridge between the healers and our guests.

With meticulous attention to detail and unparalleled experience working with many thousands of guests, the Temple has developed and refined various ayahuasca healing programs in our beautiful jungle setting, about two hours by boat and track from the Peruvian city of Iquitos.

We consider our ayahuasca healing retreats as sacred work and are dedicated to providing the ultimate conditions for our guests to experience profound long-term healing and self-transformation.

The Temple has become recognized, by the thousands of participants we have supported over the years, as a ‘rebirthing’ center. Our healing work often catalyses a process of awakening, followed by many years of deep process that inspires and informs your ongoing spiritual evolution.

Located in the heart of the Peruvian Amazon, we offer the opportunity for our guests to truly unplug from the modern world and experience an immersion into the rhythms and energies of the Amazon Rainforest – connecting to the source and birthplace of Ayahuasca. There is simply no better place to work with the Medicine!

The Shipibo system of plant-spirit healing (curanderismo) has the potential to shift you into right relationship with your self – your true nature, your loved ones, and ultimately, an intimate and primordial (re)connection with the natural kingdom.

By addressing the psycho-emotional patterns, energetic imbalances and personal & ancestral traumas that are at the source of suffering, ayahuasca and the Temple’s team of Shipibo healers can help you to honour and author your life, working towards a consistent experience of balance, centeredness, and a sense of deep purpose and fulfilment.

All Temple retreats include:

  • Exceptionally high ratio of healers and staff to guests
  • A high number of ayahuasca ceremonies (six on every retreat)
  • A series of six different floral baths
  • Plant vapor baths
  • Plant remedies – subject to individual needs
  • Energetic massages from the healers
  • A nutritional, balanced and tasty ayahuasca dieta friendly meals
  • Individual consultations and ongoing guidance from the healers and facilitators
  • A strong focus on how to process and integrate ayahuasca healing, both during and after retreat

Temple of the Way of Light offers a unique window into ancient spiritual practices, blending traditional ceremonies with a modern, reflective atmosphere. The setting itself is enchanting—a mix of natural beauty and a touch of mysticism that makes you feel like you’re stepping into another world. I found the rituals to be both raw and culturally rich, with moments that stirred up a whirlwind of emotions and insights. That said, there were times when the logistical flow felt off; transitions between ceremonies occasionally seemed rushed, leaving little room for spontaneous reflection. The communal spaces exuded authenticity but could use a bit more comfort for those long days of intense work. Still, if you’re open to a deeply cultural and transformative experience, this retreat is well worth the journey.

My stay at Temple of the Way of Light was a profound dive into my inner self, offering powerful ceremonies that stirred up emotions I’d long suppressed. The retreat’s natural setting is idyllic—sun-dappled clearings, cool breezes, and an ambiance that invites introspection. The group ceremonies were intense and cathartic, giving me flashes of clarity that reconnected me with parts of myself I’d forgotten existed. However, I sometimes felt that the integration phase could have been more personalized. While the group sessions were warm and communal, there were moments when I desperately needed individual guidance to process some of the heavier revelations. Overall, the experience was deeply healing, but a bit more one-on-one support would have made the journey even smoother.

I entered Temple of the Way of Light with high expectations for breakthrough healing after years of internal struggle. The natural setting is undeniably captivating—a serene retreat away from the relentless pace of everyday life. The ceremonies themselves were potent; I experienced intense moments of emotional release and glimpses of insights that were both beautiful and raw. However, I found the overall follow-up to be inconsistent. The integration sessions felt rushed and at times impersonal, leaving me to process some of the more intense experiences on my own. Additionally, while the retreat’s aesthetic is powerful, the level of comfort in certain areas didn’t quite match the depth of the emotional work being done. In short, while the medicine is undeniably transformative, the support system sometimes falls short, leaving me with mixed feelings about the overall experience.

My time at Temple of the Way of Light was nothing short of miraculous. I came with the weight of long-held fears and old regrets, and what I encountered was a space of radical healing. The setting is breathtaking, a sanctuary where nature and spirituality merge seamlessly. During the ceremonies, I experienced a rush of emotions and vivid insights that shattered my self-imposed limits. I’ll never forget the moment when, amid soft chants and the glow of candlelight, I felt an overwhelming surge of love and acceptance washing over me. The facilitators—grounded, empathetic, and profoundly wise—guided our journey with a rare blend of sincerity and skill. The after-ceremony circles weren’t just discussions; they were deep, transformative exchanges that left me feeling both seen and understood. I walked away with a heart full of gratitude and a clear vision for a brighter future.

I arrived at Temple of the Way of Light with a heavy heart and a mind desperate for change. The retreat is tucked away in a setting that feels like a hidden Eden—lush greenery, the soft murmur of a nearby stream, and natural light that transforms every moment into something sacred. From the very first ceremony, I was immersed in a deep, almost cinematic experience that made me confront and release decades of buried pain. I remember a particular session where I felt as if I were witnessing my own rebirth: tears flowed freely, and the facilitator’s gentle guidance helped me face my darkest memories with compassion. The integration sessions, held in intimate circles around a crackling fire, allowed me to share and reflect with others in a way that felt like a family reunion of souls. I left transformed—lighter, clearer, and with a new lease on life.
