🔍 Critical Notes

Spirit Plant Journeys’ $2,580, 8-day ayahuasca retreat in Peru’s Sacred Valley offers a transformative experience, praised on retreat.guru for its safe, intimate setting and skilled facilitators like Sarah and Ryan. The organic meals and Shipibo traditions add depth, but other content questions its polished approach, and Reddit highlights broader commercialization risks in Peru. Ayahuasca’s legal status in Peru is ambiguous, and dated reviews suggest caution—verify current authenticity, facilitator involvement, and safety protocols directly.

Ayahuasca Origin

Ancient Ritual

Ayahuasca is a sacred plant medicine that has been used in ceremonial context for thousands of years. The first ceremonial cup was found in Ecuador about 2500 years ago. Traditions of the Indigenous tribes and Mestizo shamans throughout Peru, Brazil, Ecuador and Colombia work with Ayahuasca using it for different purposes. Each tribe and tradition has its own unique origin story, belief system, ritual, set and setting, through which they use this medicine.

Each country and tradition has a different name for Ayahuasca, some call it Caapi, Yage, Ayahuasca. About 75 different tribes still use Ayahuasca today.Within the indigenous communities of Peru, Ayahuasca has been used for healing and divination. Predicting the future and, protecting the tribes. There is no significant written record about the history of Ayahuasca, as everything was passed on through memory and medicine, from tribe to tribe and, healer to healer.

Ayahuasca Rite of Passage.

A tool for transmutation

Shamanism has been practiced for over 80 000 years. From Australia to Peru. Human beings have used Shamanic practices and altered states of perception to transcend the physical and connect with the sacred realms. Connect with everything that is. This rise of Spiritual practices is giving birth to a new era for Ayahuasca. And Ayahuasca is giving herself a new era, through us. In the context of Shamanism, a lot has changed. From tribal ceremonies to a world wide desire for expansion and healing. The tribe has become the world, and is desperately seeking connection. The meeting of your human consciousness and plant consciousness allows for you to witness what is already happening inside your body.

Shamanic plant ceremonies are an accelerated way for you to find healing. Plant medicine consciousness meets your consciousness, in duality. Helping you to witness what must be removed and what no longer serves you. So you can release it and transmute to a new self. The nature of this work is called Shadow work. The use of Plant medicine, in a specific set and setting makes it ritualistic. The healers serve as a catalyst in ceremony, using their medicine songs as tools for moving energies within you. So you can come and connect with your own healing abilities, and awaken.

Ayahuasca renaissance.

Modern Times

Traditionally the healer drank the brew, not the patient. The patient would sit in the ceremony and receive healing sessions from the Maestro or Maestra, without having to drink Ayahuasca brew. Through those ceremonies, the healer would diagnose the patient and receive information about how to cure the roots of the illness in the patient. Then, they would begin a long-term treatment plan. Today, Ayahuasca is going through a revolutionary phase. For the first time, healers share their medicine with non-tribal members in the context of retreat programs.

One where the patient drinks in order to meet the healer in an altered state of perception. Allowing them to gain their own insight, and gain new perspective on their ”mindset” through the felt experience of Sacred medicine in their body. This allows for the patient to use Ayahuasca as a means to find more awareness of the self, while the Shaman serves as a catalyst for the patient’s healing process by removing energies and emotions stuck in the body through their medicine wisdom, using their Icaros (medicine songs)

Our Intention

Our center serves as a bridge and support system for the transmutation and transformations you go through during your stay here. Respecting the Shipibo tradition and taking part in their ceremonies does not mean that you need to subscribe to their belief system or truth. This work is about connection with your divine self and your own inner truth. Our role is to support your process and provide the set and setting for this work to unfold in a grounded and real way.

Experience your own journey.

Experience Traditional Ayahuasca ceremonies led by Orfelinda Sanancino, an incredible female Amazonian healer, that want to share their medicine with the world. Our programs are designed specifically to support your journey towards self expansion, grounded spiritual integration and, awakening.

Spirit Plant Journeys delivered an unforgettable experience, no question about it. The ayahuasca ceremonies were intense and deeply meaningful, with the Maestra’s guidance shining through every moment. The jungle’s energy wrapped around us, making each session feel otherworldly. I loved the Temezcal ceremony—it was a sweaty, soul-cleansing highlight. That said, there were some hiccups. The accommodations leaned more rustic than I’d hoped—think thin mattresses and spotty hot water. Communication with some staff was also tricky due to a slight language barrier, which left me guessing at times. These weren’t dealbreakers, though. The retreat’s impact outweighed the flaws, leaving me with insights I’ll carry forever. Four stars for a powerful journey that could use a few practical tweaks.

I arrived at Spirit Plant Journeys with a heart full of questions and a mind clouded by uncertainty. What I found was beyond anything I could have imagined—a profound, soul-stirring experience that reshaped my entire being. The ayahuasca ceremonies, led by the Maestra, were a sacred dance of light and shadow. Her chants wove through the jungle air, guiding me through vivid visions and raw emotional breakthroughs. The Peruvian Andes provided a breathtaking backdrop, amplifying the sense of connection to something greater. The Temezcal ceremony felt like a rebirth, purging old wounds, while the morning yoga sessions grounded me in peace. The staff’s attentiveness and the small group size made me feel held and understood throughout. I left lighter, clearer, and more connected to myself than ever before. Five stars for a life-altering journey.

Spirit Plant Journeys has a lot going for it—the jungle location is stunning, and the ceremonies are undeniably powerful. The Maestra’s presence was captivating, and the Temezcal was a unique addition. But for me, the experience fell short of expectations. The group was bigger than I’d imagined, and the facilitators seemed spread too thin to offer much individual attention. I found the ayahuasca sessions overwhelming, and without enough support, I struggled to process them. The accommodations were bare-bones, and the food got repetitive fast. I did walk away with some clarity, but it felt like a missed opportunity. Three stars—it’s got potential, but it wasn’t the right fit for me.

The time I spent at Spirit Plant Journeys was transformative, no doubt. The ayahuasca ceremonies, led by the Maestra, opened doors in my mind I didn’t know existed—intense, beautiful, and humbling all at once. The jungle setting felt alive, amplifying every sensation, and the yoga sessions were a perfect way to start the day. But I found myself wanting more afterward. The group integration talks were insightful, but I craved one-on-one time to unpack my experiences fully. The schedule also felt packed, leaving little room to breathe between activities. It’s a strong retreat with a lot to offer, and I left with meaningful takeaways—just wish there’d been more support to tie it all together. Four stars for a great, if slightly rushed, experience.

I’ll admit it—I was nervous about trying ayahuasca for the first time. But from the moment I arrived at Spirit Plant Journeys, those fears melted away. The team’s professionalism and warmth were immediately reassuring. They walked us through every step, from the pre-ceremony preparations to the integration talks afterward. The ceremonies themselves, guided by the Maestra’s hauntingly beautiful songs, were powerful yet safe. I always felt someone was there if I needed support, which made all the difference. The jungle setting was serene, with the sounds of nature blending into the experience. The accommodations were simple but cozy, and the food was nourishing. What stood out most was the care put into making this accessible for beginners like me—I left feeling healed and empowered. Five stars for an exceptional, compassionate retreat.
