🔍 Critical Notes

Sowa Soma was founded by Fiona and Neil, a husband and wife team who have been working with medicinal plants for nearly 15 years, holding retreats in Europe and Costa Rica. In 2021, they decided to take their family and work and relocate to Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast, to further deepen their connection to Ayahuasca and the jungle. Their trauma-informed approach and small group philosophy represent strengths in the current market. However, potential participants should note the relatively limited online review presence compared to more established centers, and pricing information requires direct inquiry. Costa Rica’s legal status regarding ayahuasca remains somewhat ambiguous, operating in a regulatory gray area that participants should understand before booking.

🆘 Screening & Mental Health Risks

Before each retreat their participants are carefully screened and interviewed to ensure they are the right fit for their needs. They will always assist and recommend different spaces if they are unable to accommodate someone. The center acknowledges there are contraindications with Ayahuasca including mental health issues, physical health issues and certain pharmaceutical medications that can make Ayahuasca consumption dangerous, emphasizing the importance of detailed screening of participants and minimum safety standards around the ceremony. Always consult with healthcare providers before participating.

🧪 Brew Substance

The founders are vocal about serving authentic ayahuasca, stating that analogue versions served at many European retreat centres are not Ayahuasca and constitute a disservice to advertise these plants as such, misinforming retreat participants. They appear to use traditional B. caapi and chacruna combinations, though specific sourcing details are not publicly disclosed.

📍 Location, Setting & Style

  • Costa Rica: Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast offers lush rainforest environments distinct from the Pacific side, with rich biodiversity and a more relaxed, Caribbean cultural influence.
  • Setting: The property features pristine virgin rainforest with private ocean views, surrounded by 9 acres of primary rainforest while remaining accessible to medical facilities within 20 minutes and Limón airport within just over an hour. Wildlife includes monkeys, sloths, and diverse bird species.
  • Style: During wholly-immersive 7-day retreats working with Ayahuasca, guests are completely looked after by the team to disconnect from the outside world whilst reconnecting with nature, their hearts and souls. Between ceremonies they promote rest, recuperation and integration that includes optional excursions into Costa Rica’s natural treasures.

Practical guidance: They provide complimentary transfer from San Jose to retreats, with guests able to arrange their own return transportation. They recommend staying one night in San Jose at the Hilton Garden Inn City Airport as the drive is around 5 hours, or alternatively taking a domestic flight to Limón (35 minutes) with arranged transport from there.

Should You Book?

Sowa Soma suits individuals prioritizing safety, trauma-informed care, and intimate group settings over larger retreat experiences. The founders’ extensive experience and educational approach appeal to those seeking comprehensive preparation and integration support. However, those requiring extensive online reviews for validation or transparent upfront pricing might prefer more established centers with greater digital presence. The remote jungle location appeals to nature lovers but may challenge those preferring more accessible settings.

The Team & Story

Sowa Soma was founded by Neil and Fiona, a husband and wife team who have been working with medicinal plants for nearly 15 years, in Europe and Costa Rica. Neil has sat in many circles, both indigenous and non indigenous, in the Amazon, coming to know and learn from lineages within the Shipibo-Konibo and Huni Kuin tribes. As part of his continuation to learn with plants, Neil has carried out a number of master plant dietas including Noya Rao, Mugwort, White Sage, Chuchuwasi, Rose, Dandelion, Bobinsana, Passionflower, Cacao, and Tulsi. Fiona is particularly passionate about supporting women in ceremony, helping create the safest environment possible and extends this work to helping women integrate plants into their daily lives.

Prep & Integration Tips

At Sowa Soma they believe everyone’s diet and preparation will be different according to their circumstances with no right or wrong way, taking a tailored approach that considers the individual’s circumstances. The main purpose of the diet in their eyes is to begin the journey of respect and relationship with the plants. They advise making space for integration work whilst understanding this work is done as we interact with the world, sharing many anchors and tools to navigate the integration process, offering ongoing integration 1-2-1 support for both those who have drank with them and those who have not.
