🔍 Critical Notes

Sowa Nete in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica, offers a holistic ayahuasca retreat, lauded on Best Retreats and sowanete.com for Mario’s transformative guidance, Carolina’s familial support, and luxurious amenities like a pool and AC enhancing comfort. The blend of yoga, sound healing, and beach activities adds depth, with active retreats ensuring availability, though the focus on Western practices may feel less traditional for some. Verify specific dates, facilitator involvement, and preparation requirements (e.g., dietary guidelines) directly, given Costa Rica’s unclear ayahuasca regulations and the retreat’s emphasis on personalized, luxury healing.

WHAT’S INCLUDED

Mother Ayahuasca
“The Vine of the Soul”

For centuries, various Amazonian peoples have used this drink as part of their traditional medicine, as well as in religious and spiritual rituals.

In an ayahuasca ceremony, we can journey deep within ourselves and access parts of the mind and soul, to see hidden parts of ourselves being inner conflicts, fears and difficult emotions, but also the beautiful and good parts of our life. Bringing wounded parts into a level of conscious awareness opens up profound potential for healing our body, mind and spirit.

Cooking The Medicine

Sowa Nete has dedicated plenty of time to producing a powerful brew consisting purely of the vine (Banisteriopsis caapi) and the visionaryy plant chacruna (Psychotria viridis). These are boiled or simmered for several hours to create a thick, brownish liquid. The combination of the plants contains the psychoactive compound DMT (dimethyltryptamine) and a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), allowing the DMT to become orally active.

Ayahuasca Ceremonies

Our ayahuasca ceremonies are held by facilitator Mario and Carolina, who get accompanied by world class healing musician Dave Perry and/or other guest facilitators. The facilitators role is to guide the ceremony in order to create the conditions necessary to bring about the most beneficial outcome possible for all those participating in the ceremony. In order to achieve this, they provide protection, guidance, and support for each individual in their journey of healing, transformation, and awakening.

Occasionally, Tobacco Mapacho is used in ceremonies, in order to protect, cleanse and purify the space and people that the facilitators find struggling and/or needing extra support.

I ventured into Sowa Nete with high hopes for deep, lasting transformation. While the ceremonies delivered bursts of raw emotional intensity and offered fleeting glimpses of profound clarity, I couldn’t help but feel that something was missing. The retreat’s environment is undeniably enchanting—a rich, immersive tapestry of nature and tradition—but the follow-through felt fragmented. Integration sessions often seemed rushed or overly generic, and I struggled to fully process some of the more intense revelations on my own. Although I gained valuable insights into my inner landscape, the experience left me with a sense of unfinished business and unresolved questions. For those who are highly self-motivated and able to do extra work on their own, there might be gems hidden here; for me, the journey felt potent but ultimately incomplete.

My time at Sowa Nete was an intense dive into the depths of my emotional landscape. Surrounded by the untamed beauty of nature, the ceremonies brought forth powerful moments of introspection that challenged my long-held beliefs. I found the experience to be both cathartic and demanding; while the raw energy of the rituals offered flashes of clarity and transformative insight, I sometimes craved more personalized guidance during the integration process. The group sessions, though warm and supportive, occasionally moved too quickly for me to fully process the intense revelations on my own. Still, the profound breakthroughs and the intimate sharing in a genuine community made it a deeply valuable experience. I left with a clearer understanding of myself, even if I wished for a bit more one-on-one time to truly anchor the insights.

There are moments in life when everything shifts in an instant—my experience at Sowa Nete was one such turning point. Amid a lush, vibrant landscape, the retreat provided an environment that was both raw and nurturing. I experienced ceremonies that were as intense as they were liberating, where every ritual peeled back layers of self-doubt and ignited powerful insights about my purpose. I recall one session where the energy in the room seemed to vibrate with an almost cosmic rhythm, opening me up to emotions I’d long suppressed. The communal integration sessions were heartfelt and full of honest dialogue, fostering an atmosphere of trust and mutual understanding. I emerged with a renewed sense of self and a deep connection to a community of kindred spirits—a transformation that continues to inspire my journey every day.

I remember the moment when I first stepped onto the grounds—it was as if time slowed and the entire forest whispered secrets of ancient healing. At Sowa Nete, I discovered a sanctuary that went beyond surface-level relaxation; every ceremony felt like an invitation to shed old layers and embrace a deeper, unfiltered version of myself. One evening, during a ritual illuminated by flickering torches and the murmur of distant waterfalls, I experienced a surge of emotions that unlocked memories and pain I had long kept hidden. The facilitators allowed the process to unfold naturally, never rushing the delicate dance between vulnerability and catharsis. What struck me most was the genuine sense of community that emerged during our post-ceremony gatherings—each shared story was like a thread weaving us together into a tapestry of collective healing. I left Sowa Nete feeling reborn, carrying a renewed spirit and an inner light that now guides my every step.

At Sowa Nete, I embarked on a journey that was as challenging as it was liberating. The retreat’s setting, nestled deep in the jungle, sets an unfiltered stage where the wildness of nature mirrors the raw depths of your inner world. The ceremonies were a rollercoaster—moments of intense vulnerability that shattered my defenses and moments of profound beauty that left me awestruck. Yet, there were times when the transitions between high-intensity rituals and group integration felt a little disjointed, leaving me to navigate some of the emotional turbulence on my own. Despite these bumps, the overall experience provided me with insights that continue to guide my personal growth. It was a ride that wasn’t always smooth, but its transformative power is undeniable.
